When dilute sulphuric acid is poured on zinc granules, zinc being more reactive than hydrogen displaces it from the acid and forms zinc sulphate and hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is a combustible gas and burns with a popping sound. This can be observed when a burnt match stick is bought near to the beaker. Thus, the gas formed is H 2 gas and reaction can be represented as follows:
