List two difference in the characteristic properties of the virtual images formed by the two types of spherical lenses (concave and convex). How are these characteristics of the two lenses use in the correction of the two common defects of vision namely myopia and hypermetropia?
Solution:
(i) Virtual image formed by concave lens
(1) Diminished (2) Erect
(ii) Virtual image formed by convex lens
(1) Enlarged (2) Erect
Correction in Myopia: Myopia is also known as near-sightedness. A person with myopia can see nearby objects clearly but cannot see distant objects distinctly. This defect can be corrected by using a concave lens of suitable power. A concave lens of suitable power will bring the image back on to the retina and thus the defect is corrected.
Correction in Hypermetropia: Hypermetropia is also known as far-sightedness. A person with hypermetropia can see distant objects clearly but cannot see nearby objects distinctly. This defect can be corrected by using a convex lens of appropriate power. Eye-glasses with converging lenses provide the additional focusing power required for forming the image on the retina.
