Question : 32
Total: 39
What is a solenoid? When does a solenoid behave as a magnet? Draw the pattern of the magnetic field produced inside it showing the directions of the magnetic field lines.
Solution:
A solenoid is a coil containing many circular turns. These wires are wrapped closely in the shape of a cylinder.
A solenoid behaves like a bar magnet when a current is passed through it. Its one end behaves as magnetic North Pole and the other end as magnetic South Pole. The magnetic field created is similar to magnetic field of a bar magnet. In other words, like a bar magnet, the field lines emerge from one end and merge into another.
