Monika, Rashmi and Garima are childhood friends. After completing their education, Monika joined a school as a teacher. Rashmi joined a firm as a Chartered Accountant and Garima as a General Manager in a MultiNational Company. After a long time in a re-union function of the school, they met each other. Rashmi said that they were all 'professionals now.' Garima told Rashmi that she can say this about Monika and herself, but not about her since Manager is not considered a full fledged professional.
Why did Garima say that she was not a professional ? State any three points in support of your answer.
Solution:
Garima said that she was not a professional because being a manager she is not considered as a full-fledged professional.
The following are three points in support of the statement:
(i) Lack of a standardised qualification: Unlike professions such as law, engineering or accounting, there is no standardised qualification for managers. While some managers may have a degree in business administration, but it is not a mandatory requirement to become a manager. Therefore, the lack of a standardised qualification for managers makes it challenging to consider them as full-fledged professionals.
(ii) Lack of regulatory bodies: Professions have regulatory bodies that set standards and ensure that their members comply with ethical codes of conduct. For e.g., the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India regulates the accounting profession in India. However, there is no regulatory body for managers. This lack of regulation makes it difficult to consider managers as full-fledged professionals.
(iii) Varied job roles: The role of a manager can vary widely across industries and organisations. For e.g., a general manager in a manufacturing company has different job responsibilities than a general manager in a software company. This variability in job roles makes it challenging to define what it means to be a manager and what qualifications are necessary to become one. Therefore, it is difficult to consider managers as full-fledged professionals.
