Question : 2
Total: 4
(a) (i) Write the IUPAC name of the following complex:
[Pt(NH3)6]Cl4
(ii) On the basis of crystal field theory, write the electronic configuration of d4 ion, if o<P.
(iii) What are Heteroleptic complexes?
OR
(b) (i) Using IUPAC norms write the formulas for the follwing:
(i) Pentaamminenitrito-N-Cobalt (III)
(ii) Tetrahydroxidozincate (II)
(ii) What is crystal field splitting energy?
Solution:
(a) (i) The IUPAC name of [Pt(NH3)6]Cl4 is Hexaammineplatinum (IV) chloride.
(ii) If 0<P, the electronic configuration of d4 ion will be t2g3eg1 as it is associated with weak field and high spin situation. Thus, the fourth electron will enter into eg orbital.
(iii) The complexes in which central atom or metal ion is surrounded by more than one type of ligands are called heteroleptic complexes. For example: [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+.
OR
(b) (i) (a)Pentaamminenitrito- N-cobalt(III) is
[Co(NO2)(NH3)5]2+
(b) Tetrahydroxidozincate(II) is [Zn(OH)4]2
(ii) The difference of energy between the two sets of degenerated orbitals (t2g. and eg) after crystal field splitting is known as crystal field splitting energy. It is denoted by o.
