Question : 11
Total: 11
An object is placed in front of a concave mirror of focal length of 12 cm . There are two possible positions of the object for which the image formed is three times the size of the object.
(a) Draw the ray diagram for the each case, and
(b) Find the distance between the two positions of the object
(a) Draw the ray diagram for the each case, and
(b) Find the distance between the two positions of the object
Solution:
(a) When the object is placed between the pole and the focus, then a magnified, virtual and erect image is formed by concave mirror.
When the object is placed between centre of curvature and focus then a magnified, real and inverted image is formed by concave mirror.
(b) For virtual image;
= −
= 3
∴ v = − 3 u
Putting in mirror formula :
+
=
Or,
+
=
∴ u = − 8 cm
For real image;
= −
= 3
∴ v = 3 u
Putting in mirror formula :
+
=
∴ u = − 16 cm
The distance between the two positions is8 cm .
