Question : 29
Total: 35
(a) Briefly describe how the current sensitivity of a moving coil galvanometer can be increased.
(b) A galvanometer shows full scale deflection for current Ig. A resistance R1 is required to convert it into a voltmeter of range (0V) and a resistance R2 to convert it into a voltmeter of range (02V). Find the resistance of the galvanometer.
(a) Current sensitivity of galvanometer:
Current sensitivity of galvanometer =θI=NBAc
So, to increase the current sensitivity:
(i) Permanent magnet should be strong so that B is high.
(ii) N and A should be high.
(iii) Value of c must be low.
(b) To convert into a voltmeter of range (0V),
V=Ig(Rg+R1) .....(i)
To convert into a voltmeter of range (02V),
2V=Ig(Rg+R2) .....(ii)
Dividing equation (i) by (ii)
V
2V
=(Rg+R1)(Rg+R2)

Or,
1
2
=(Rg+R1)(Rg+R2)

Rg=R22R1
