Question : 47
Total: 88
Solve the following numerical problem: [3] Ethane burns in oxygen according to the chemical equation :
2C2H6+7O24CO2+6H2O
If 80ml of ethane is burnt in 300ml of oxygen, find the composition of the resultant gaseous mixture when measured at room temperature.
Solution:
Given: 2C2H6+7O24CO2+6H2O
2 moles of ethane reacts with 7 moles of oxygen to produce -6 moles of H2O+4 moles of carbondioxide.
2ml . of ethane reacts with 7ml . of oxygen = 4ml . of carbon dioxide +ml of H2O .
80ml . of ethane reacts with 280ml . of oxygen =160ml . of CO2+240ml . of H2O
In this reaction ethane in the limiting reagent and 20ml . of oxygen will be left, unreacted.
The composition of the resultant gaseous mixture when measured at room temperature will be:
20ml. of oxygen gas : 160ml . of CO2 and 240ml . of H2O.
