Why is nitric acid added to sodium extract before adding silver nitrate for testing halogens?
Solution:
Halogens are detected by A g N O 3 due to the formation of AgX ppt. But, if the Lassaigne’s extract contains S 2 – or C N – ions due to the compound, then they may interfere in the test for halogens. C N – and S 2 – form AgCN and A g 2 S with A g N O 3 and may produce erroneous results. Therefore, the Lassaigne’s extract is treated with H N O 3 to decompose HCN and H 2 S (vapours) so as to prevent interference.
