Question : 21
Total: 30
The Mn3+ ion is unstable in solution and undergoes disproportionation to give Mn2+,MnO2, and H+ ion. Write a balanced ionic equation for the reaction.
Solution:
The skeletal equation is :
Mn(aq)3+ → Mn(aq)2++MnO2(s)+H(aq)+
Oxidation half equation : Mn(aq)3+ →
+4
MnO2(s)

or, Mn(aq)+3+2H2O(l) → MnO2(s)+4H(aq)++e− ... (i)
Reduction half equation : Mn(aq)3+ → Mn(aq)2+
or, Mn(aq)3++e− → Mn(aq)2+ ... (ii)
Adding Eq. (i) and Eq. (ii), the balanced equation for the disproportionation reaction is
2Mn(aq)3++2H2O(l) → MnO2(s)+Mn(aq)2++4H(aq)+
