Although geometries of N H 3 and H 2 O molecules are distorted tetrahedral, bond angle in water is less than that of ammonia. Discuss.
Solution:
Bond angle in N H 3 is 107.5° and in H 2 O , angle is 104.5°. In H 2 O , oxygen has two lone pairs and in N H 3 , nitrogen has only one lone pair. In H 2 O , two lone pairs on oxygen repel each other and the bonded pairs more strongly and cause them to come closer thereby reducing the angle.
