Write reactions to justify amphoteric nature of aluminium.
Solution:
Amphoteric substances are those that can react with both acids and bases. Aluminium reacts with HCl to liberate H2 gas as :
2Al(s)+6HCl(aq) → 2Al(aq)3++6Cl(aq)–+3H2(g)
Aluminium can react with aqueous alkali and liberate hydrogen gas.
2Al(s)+2NaOH(aq)+6H2O(l) →
2Na+[Al(OH)4](aq)−
Sodium‌tetrahydroxoaluminate(III)
+3H2
