Write reactions to justify amphoteric nature of aluminium.
Solution:
Amphoteric substances are those that can react with both acids and bases. Aluminium reacts with HCl to liberate H 2 gas as :
2 A l ( s ) + 6 H C l ( a q ) → 2 A l ( a q ) 3 + + 6 C l ( a q ) – + 3 H 2 ( g )
Aluminium can react with aqueous alkali and liberate hydrogen gas.
2 A l ( s ) + 2 N a O H ( a q ) + 6 H 2 O ( l ) →
+ 3 H 2 ↑
Aluminium can react with aqueous alkali and liberate hydrogen gas.
