Question : 26
Total: 36
Find a positive value of m for which the coefficient of x 2 in the expansion ( 1 + x ) m is 6.
Solution:
Suppose x 2 occurs in the (r + 1)th term of the expansion ( 1 + x ) m .
NowT r + 1 =
C r x r
On comparing power of x inx 2 and T r + 1 , we get r = 2.
Thus coefficient ofx 2 =
C 2
⇒
C 2 = 6 (given) ⇒
= 6
⇒ m (m – 1) = 12 ⇒m 2 – m – 12 = 0 ⇒ (m + 3) (m – 4) = 0 ⇒ m = – 3, 4
⇒ m = 4 (Since m cannot be negative)
Now
On comparing power of x in
Thus coefficient of
⇒
⇒ m (m – 1) = 12 ⇒
⇒ m = 4 (Since m cannot be negative)
