Question : 27
Total: 106
If the sum of n terms of an A.P. is 3 n 2 + 5n and its mth term is 164, find the value of m.
Solution:
We have S n = 3 n 2 + 5n, where Sn be the sum of n terms.
S 1 = 3 × 1 + 5 × 1 = 3 + 5 = 8 = a 1 , S 2 = 3 × 4 + 5 × 2 = 12 + 10 = 22 = a 1 + a 2
⇒ 8 +a 2 = 22 ⇒ a 2 = 14
∴ d =a 2 – a 1 = 14 – 8 = 6
Now,a m = a + (m – 1)d ⇒ 164 = 8 + (m – 1) × 6
⇒
= m - 1 ⇒ m = 26 + 1 = 27
⇒ 8 +
∴ d =
Now,
