Find the angle between the x-axis and the line joining the points (3, –1) and (4, –2).

Solution:

We are given that the points are A(3, –1) and B(4, –2)
Slope of AB =

−2(−1)

4−3

−2+1

= - 1 ⇒ tan θ = - 1
Where θ is the angle which AB makes with x-axis.
Now, tan θ = –1 = – tan 45° = tan (180° – 45°) = tan 135° ⇒ θ = 135°.
