Find the distance between P ( x 1 , y 1 ) and Q ( x 1 , y 1 ) when :
(i) PQ is parallel tothe y-axis,
(ii) PQ is parallel to the x-axis.
(i) PQ is parallel tothe y-axis,
(ii) PQ is parallel to the x-axis.
Solution:
We are given that co-ordinates of P is ( x 1 , y 1 ) and Q is ( x 1 , y 1 ) .Distance between the points P ( x 1 , y 1 ) and Q ( x 1 , y 1 ) is
PQ =√ ( x 2 − x 1 ) + ( y 2 − y 1 ) 2 ... (i)
(i) When PQ is parallel to y-axis thenx 1 = x 2 from (1), we have
PQ =√ ( x 2 − x 1 ) 2 + ( y 2 − y 1 ) 2
=√ ( x 1 − x 2 ) 2 + ( y 2 − y 1 ) 2 = | y 2 − y 1 |
(ii) When PQ is parallel to x-axis, theny 1 = y 2 from (1), we have
PQ =√ ( x 2 − x 1 ) 2 + ( y 2 − y 1 ) 2
=√ ( x 2 − x 1 ) 2 + 0 = | x 2 − x 1 |
PQ =
(i) When PQ is parallel to y-axis then
PQ =
=
(ii) When PQ is parallel to x-axis, then
PQ =
