Question : 28
Total: 28
Which acid of each pair shown here would you expect to be stronger ?
(i)C H 3 C O 2 H or C H 2 F C O 2 H
(ii)C H 2 F C O 2 H or C H 2 C l C O 2 H
(iii)C H 2 F C H 2 C H 2 C O 2 H or C H 3 C H F C H 2 C O 2 H
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
Solution:
(i) H 2 C F C O O H will be stronger of the two. The presence of electronegative F atom at the α-C causes electron withdrawal from the COOH and facilitates the release of H+ .
(ii)C H 2 F C O 2 H is a stronger acid for the same reason as stated above. F is more electronegative than Cl, so it withdraws electrons from the carboxyl group to a greater extent.
(iii)C H 3 C H F C H 2 C O O H is stronger. Although both the given acids have F atom in them, it is the proximity of F in C H 3 C H F C H 2 C O O H to the COOH group which makes it more acidic.
(iv)
(ii)
(iii)
(iv)
is more acidic due to the presence of electron withdrawing CF3 group in it.
