What is the effect of temperature on the rate constant of a reaction?
How can this temperature effect on rate constant be represented quantitatively?
Solution:
The rate constant increases with increase in temperature and becomesalmost double for every 10° increase in temperature. Swedish chemist,Arrhenius derived a quantitative relation between rate of reaction andtemperature. According to Arrhenius,
k=Ae
Ea
RT

or, logk=logA EaRT
or, log

wherek1 = rate constant at temperature T1,
k2 = rate constant at temperature T2,
Ea = energy of activation, R = universal gas constant.
