Discuss the nature of bonding in the following coordination entities on the basis of valence bond theory :
(i)[ F e ( C N ) 6 ] 4 –
(ii)[ F e F 6 ] 3 –
(iii)[ C o ( C 2 O 4 ) 3 ] 3 –
(iv)[ C o F 6 ] 3 −

Solution:
(i) [ F e ( C N ) 6 ] 4 – : Fe(26) has electronic configuration [ A r ] 4 s 2 3 d 6 .
Fe2 + has electronic configuration[ A r ] 4 s 2 3 d 6
CN– ion causes pairing of electrons because it is a strong field ligand.
(ii)[ F e F 6 ] 3 – : Fe(26) has electronic configuration [ A r ] 4 s 2 3 d 6 . F e 3 + : [ A r ] 4 s 0 3 d 5 F being a weak field ligand, does not cause pairing of electrons.[ C o ( C 2 O 4 ) 3 ] 3 – : Co(27) has electronic configuration [ A r ] 4 s 2 3 d 7 .
C o 3 + : [ A r ] 4 s 0 3 d 6
C 2 O 4 2 – being a strong field ligand causes pairing of electrons.[ C o F 6 ] 3 − : Co(27) has electronic configuration [ A r ] 4 s 2 3 d 7 .
C o 3 + : [ A r ] 4 s 0 3 d 6 .
F – being a weak field ligand, cannot cause pairing of electrons.
Fe
CN
It has octahedral shape and is diamagnetic in nature due to absence of electrons.
