Write down the IUPAC name for each of the following complexes and indicate the oxidation state, electronic configuration and coordination number. Also give stereochemistry and magnetic moment of the complex :
(i) K[Cr(H2O)2(C2O4)2].3H2O
(ii)[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2
(iii) CrCl3(py)3
(iv) Cs[FeCl4]
(v) K4[Mn(CN)6]
Solution:
(i) K[Cr(H2O)2(C2O4)2].3H2O : Potassiumdiaquadioxalatochromate(III) hydrate
Oxidation state = +3; C.N. = 6; configuration = t32g
µ=n(n+2)
=3×5
= 15
=3.87B.M.
(ii)[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 : Pentaamminechloridocobalt(III) chloride
Co(27):4s23d7;Co3+:4s03d6
The oxidation state of Co = +3
C.N. = 6; Configuration = t6 2g; µ = 0 B.M.
(iv) Cs[FeCl4] : Trichloridotripyridinechromium (III) Coordination No. of Cr = 6; Oxidation state = +3; Configuration = t32g;
Cr(24):4s13d5;Cr3+:4s03d3
µ=n(n+2)
=15
=3.87B.M.
(iv) Cs[FeCl4]: Caesiumtetrachloridoferrate III)Oxidation state = +3; Coordination No. = 4; Configuration = t32g e2g
Fe (26):4s23d6;Fe3+:4s03d5
It is paramagnetic due to presence of 5 unpaired electrons.
µ=n(n+2)
=5×7
=35
=5.92B.M.;
(v) K4[Mn(CN)6] : Potassium hexacyanomanganese(II)Oxidation state = +2; Coordination no. = 6; Configuration = t2g5;
Mn(25) :[ Ar]4s23d5;Mn2+:[Ar]4s03d5
