Question : 14
Total: 32
How much electricity is required in coulomb for the oxidation of
(i)1 mol of H 2 O to O 2 ?
(ii)1 mol of FeO to F e 2 O 3 ?
(i)
(ii)
Solution:
(i) The electrode reaction for 1 mol of H 2 O is given as
H 2 O – – – – – ▶
O 2
i.e.,O 2 − – – – – – ▶
O 2 + 2 e −
∴ Quantity of electricity required= 2 F
= 2 × 96500 C = 193000 C
(ii) The electrode reaction for 1 mol ofF e O is given as
F e O – – – – – ▶
F e 2 O 3
i.e., F e 2 + – – – – – ▶ F e 3 + + e −
∴ Quantity of electricity required= 1 F = 96500 C
i.e.,
∴ Quantity of electricity required
(ii) The electrode reaction for 1 mol of
i.e.,
∴ Quantity of electricity required
