Suggest a way to determine the Λ 0 m value of water.
Solution:
Water is a weak electrolyte. Its Λ 0 m value can be determined with thehelp of Kohlrausch’s law.
Λ m 0 ( H C l ) = Λ m 0 ( H + ) + Λ m 0 ( C l − ) .......(i)
Λ m 0 ( N a O H ) = Λ m 0 ( N a + ) + Λ m 0 ( O H − ) ........ (ii)
Λ m 0 ( N a C l ) = Λ m 0 ( N a + ) + Λ m 0 ( C l − ) .......(iii)
Adding (i) and (ii) and subtracting (iii) we get
Λ m 0 ( H 2 O ) = Λ m 0 ( H + ) + Λ m 0 ( O H − )
= Λ m 0 ( H C l ) + Λ m 0 ( N a O H ) − Λ m 0 ( N a C l )
Adding (i) and (ii) and subtracting (iii) we get
