Predict conditions under which Al might be expected to reduce MgO.
Solution:
The two equations are :
(a)
A l + O 2 – – – – – – ▶
A l 2 O 3
(b)2 M g + O 2 – – – – – – ▶ 2 M g O
At the point of intersection ofA l 2 O 3 and MgO curves the ∆G° becomeszero for the reaction.
For the reduction of MgO by Al consider the reaction :3 M g O ( s ) + 2 A l ( s ) → 3 M g ( s , l , g ) + A l 2 O 3 ( s ) For this reaction the temperature should be chosen so that,
Δ , G 0 ( A l 2 O 3 ) < Δ f G 0 ( M g O )
Around 2000 K the line forA l 2 O 3 lies below that of MgO, therefore, Al canreduce MgO. However, at a temperature below the intersection point oftwo lines MgO is more stable and cannot be reduced by Al.
