Write the conditions to maximise the yield of H 2 S O 4 by Contact process.
Solution:
The key step in the manufacture of sulphuric acid is oxidation of S O 2 to S O 3 in presence of V 2 O 5 catalyst.
2 S O 2 + O 2
2 S O 3 ,
Δ H = – 196.6 k J m o l − 1
The reaction is exothermic and reversible. Hence, low temperature andhigh pressure are the favourable conditions for maximum yield ofS O 3 . Inpractice a pressure of 2 bar and temperature of 720 K is maintained.
