Question : 54
Total: 101
Find the probability distribution of the number of successes in two tosses of a die, where a success is defined as number greater than
Solution:
Let S be the sample space : S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
p = probability of getting a number greater than 4 i.e., {5, 6}=
=
q = probability of not getting a number greater than 4 i.e., {1, 2, 3, 4}=
=
Let X denote the random variable, which represents the number comes on the die will be greater than 4.
∴ X can assumes the values 0, 1, 2
P X( ) = 0 = q × q=
×
=
,
P ( X = 1 ) = p × q + q × p =
×
+
×
=
P ( X = 2 ) = p × p =
×
=
Hence, the probability distribution :
p = probability of getting a number greater than 4 i.e., {5, 6}
q = probability of not getting a number greater than 4 i.e., {1, 2, 3, 4}
Let X denote the random variable, which represents the number comes on the die will be greater than 4.
∴ X can assumes the values 0, 1, 2
P X( ) = 0 = q × q
Hence, the probability distribution :
X | 0 | 1 | 2 | ||||||
P(X) | | | |
