The middle lamella is a pectin layer which cements thecell walls of two adjoining cells together. Plants needthis to give them stability and so that they can formplasmodesmata between the cells. It is the first formedlayer which is deposited at the time of cytokinesis. Thecell plate that is formed during cell division itselfdevelops into middle lamella or lamellum. The middlelamella is made up of calcium and magnesium pectates. In plants, the pectins form an unified and continuouslayer between adjacent cells.
