Sperm is the male gamete. The sperm unites with (fertilizes) an ovum (egg) of the female to produce a new offspring.
A sperm has three main parts:
The head of the sperm contains an elongated haploid nucleus, which holds the DNA of the cell and the anterior portion is covered by a cap-like structure acrosome.
The midpiece of the sperm is packed with mitochondria. Mitochondria are organelles in cells that produce energy. Sperm use the energy in the midpiece to move.
The tail of the sperm moves like a propeller, around and around. This tail is a long flagellum that pushes the sperm forward.
Spermatids is haploid cells formed by meiotic division of spermatocytes and develops into a spermatozoon after maturational events.
Explanation:
The acrosome is a membrane-bound structure formed from the Golgi apparatus located most anteriorly in the head of the sperm, It is a cap-like structure. The acrosome of sperm helps in penetration of sperm into the ovum. The acrosome carries hyaluronidase enzyme for penetration of egg.
Mitochondria are organelles in cells that produce energy. Sperm use the energy in the midpiece to move.
