Nobody shall be required to carry out forced or compulsory labour.
The term ‘forced or compulsory labour’ shall not include the following while using this article:
any work essential to be done in the usual course of detention imposed according to the arrangements of Article 5 of this Convention or during contingent release from such detention.
any service of a military character or, in case of assiduous objectors in countries where they are acknowledged, service exacted instead of mandatory military service.
any service demanded in case of an emergency or calamity menacing the life or welfare of the community, or any work or service which forms part of common civic obligations.
