The extent of solubility of alcohols in water depends upon the formation of H-bonding with water. Amongst isomeric alcohols the solubility increases with branching. This is due to the reason that as the branching increases the surface area of the non-polar hydrocarbon part decreases. Thus, the order of solubilities of isomers of butyl alcohol is, tert-butyl alcohol > sec-butyl alcohol > iso-butyl alcohol > n-butyl alcohol.
