ClO2−is diamagnetic in nature. It will not possess paramagnetism.Paramagnetism is due to presence of atleast one unpaired electron in molecule. Molecule with odd number of electrons will have atleast one unpaired electron. Total number of electrons in NO2:7+8×2=23 electrons NO:7+8=15 electrons ClO2−:17+8×2+1=34 electrons ClO2:17+8×2=33 electrons ∴ NO2,NO and ClO2, has odd number of electrons and therefore, paramagnetic in nature while ClO2− has even number of electrons and therefore exhibit diamagnetism.
