5 दिसम्बर, 2000 को भारत सरकार ने शत प्रतिशत केन्द्र द्वारा प्रायोजित 'प्रधानमंत्री ग्राम सड़क योजना ( PM−GSY ) की शुरुआत की। इसका मुख्य उद्देश्य ग्रामीण सड़कों द्वारा गाँवों को जोड़ने का उद्देश्य, जो न केवल देश के ग्रामीण विकास में सहायक होगा, बल्कि इसे गरीबी उन्मूलन कार्यक्रम का एक प्रभावी घटक स्वीकार किया गया। इस योजना के तहत 2007 तक भारत के मैदानी ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में किसी गाँव की जनसंख्या 1000 या से अधिक हो, और दुर्गम अनुसूचित जनजाति क्षेत्रों/ मरुस्थलीय या पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों में गाँव की जनसंख्या 500 या से अधिक हो के लिए सड़क निर्माण किया जाएगा। परन्तु 2007 के बाद इस योजना के तहत समतल प्रदेशों में ग्रामीण जनसंख्या को 500 या अधिक जबकि दुर्गम/अनुसूचित जनजाति/ पहाड़ी/मरुस्थलीय क्षेत्रों में ग्रामीण जनसंख्या 250 या अधिक के लिए सड़क निर्माण का प्रावधान किया गया। साथ ही साथ योजना के लिए 40% वित्त राज्य सरकार ( 60% केन्द्र सरकार ) द्वारा वहन करने का प्रावधान किया गया। यह योजना भारत सरकार का ग्रामीणविकास मंत्रालय चला रहा है।
