इंपीरियल बैंक ऑफ इंडिया ( 1921 ) को 1955 में स्टेट बैंक ऑफ इंडिया ( राष्ट्रीयकृत बैंक) में बदल दिया गया। इसके बाद 19 जुलाई, 1969 को भारत सरकार ने 14 बड़े व्यवसायिक बैंकों का पहली बार राष्ट्रीयकरण कर दिया। इसके बाद 15 अप्रैल, 1980 को 6 अन्य बैंकों का भी राष्ट्रीयकरण किया गया। वर्तमान (2017) में भारत में 19 राष्ट्रीयकृत बैंक हैं। इनका मुख्य उद्देश्य - सामाजिक विकास, निजी क्षेत्रों के एकाधिकार को रोकना, वित्तीय समावेशन, अन्त व अन्तर्क्षेत्रीय अंतर को घटाना, प्राथमिक क्षेत्र ऋण तथा लोगों के लिए बैंकिंग तंत्र से जुड़ने की रूचि बढ़ाना आदि है। राष्ट्रीयकरण का मतलब होता है - कि बैंक के प्रबंधन और वित्त (सम्पत्ति) पर सरकार का नियंत्रण हो जाएगा तथा सरकार की संस्था में भागीदारी 50% से अधिक हो जाएगी।
