This poem was written by Soyrabai, who was the wife of the Mahar saint Chokhamela. She was a poet and belonged to the Varkari movement of Maharashtra during 13th-14th century. In this poem she clearly protests the very basis of untouchability, pollution (discrimination by caste system), in explicit and moving terms. Soyrabai is questioning the idea of purity and arguing that since every human is born in the same manner, there is nothing that makes one body less or more pure than the other. Human purity is thus, fixed at birth.
