Marriedin early youth, Gandhi and his wife took the vowof celibacy after the birth of several sons. A tranquilheroine in the intense drama that has been their lifetogether, Kasturbabai followed her husband to prison,shared his three-week fasts, and fully borne her shareof his endless responsibilities. She paid Gandhi thefollowing tribute:I thank you for having had the privilege of being yourlifelong companion and helpmate. I thank you for themost perfect marriage in the world, based on Brahmacharya(self-control)and not on sex. I thank you for having considered meyour equal in your lifework for India. I thank you fornot being one of those husbands who spend their timein gambling, racing, women, wine and song tiring oftheir wives and children as the little boy quickly tiresof his childhood toys. How thankful I am that youwere not one of those husbands who devote their timeto growing rich on the exploitation of the labour ofothers.How thankful I am that you put God and country beforebribes, that you had the courage of your convictionsand a complete and implicit faith in God. Howthankful I am for a husband that put God and his countrybefore me. I am grateful to you for your toleranceof me and my shortcoming of youth, when I grumbledand rebelled against the change you made in our modeof living, from so much to so little.As a young child, I lived in your parents’ home; yourmother was a great and good woman; she trained me,taught me how to be a brave, courageous wife andhow to keep the love and respect of her son my futurehusband. As the years passed and you became India’smost beloved leader, I had none of the fears that besetwife who may be cast aside when her husband hasclimbed the ladder of success, as so often happens inother countries. I knew that death would still find ushusband and wife.
