Sardar Sarovar Project is part of the Narmada Valley Development Project, a major initiative to generate power and supply water to the Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra
states for drinking and irrigation.
The scheme was designed in 1946–1947 by the

Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSD) is situated on the Indian Narmada river in the village of Kevadia in Gujarat state.
The purpose of SSD as part of the Narmada Valley Development Project as Narmada is India's fifth-largest river, passing 1,312 km from the Amarkantak range in Madhya Pradesh to drain into the Gulf of Cambay's Arabian Sea.
