Once upon a time, there lived a poor woodcutter. He cut trees in the woods for a living. One day he was cutting wood on the bank of ariver. Suddenly, his axe slippedfrom his hand and fell into the river. The river was deep and thewoodcutter could not take his axeout. Distraught, he sat on thebank of the river and began toweep. Mercury, the god of waterappeared. He asked the woodcutter the reason for his sorrow. Thewoodcutter narrated the wholestory to Mercury. Taking pity onthe woodcutter, Mercury dived intowater and brought out a gold axe.The woodcutter refused to takeit saying that this was not his axe.Mercury again dived and broughtout a silver axe. The woodcutterdid not take this one either andrepeated that this was not his axe.Finally, Mercury brought out aniron axe. The woodcutter, ecstaticon seeing his axe, grabbed it. Mercury was highly pleased with thewoodcutter. He rewarded thewoodcutter by giving him the goldand silver axes as well.
