(3) Baba Tilka Manjhi (or Jabra Paharia) was the first Adivasi leader who took up arms against the British in the 1771. A valiant Santhal leader, he led the first armed rebellion against the British. He was caught in 1784, tied to the tail of a horse and dragged all the way to the collector’s residence at Bhagalpur, Bihar, and hung from a Banyan tree. He was the first martyr among all the freedom fighters of Jharkhand.
