Loktak Lake: Situated in the state of Manipur, it is the largest fresh water lake in Northeast India. It is also called the only Floating Island Lake in the world due to the floating phumdis (floating islands) on it. It was designated a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1990. It serves as a source of water for hydro-power generation, irrigation and drinking water for Imphal and its surrounding towns. The lake is also a source of livelihood for the rural fishermen who live in the surrounding areas and on floating islands which are actually heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil and organic matter.
