Till that time, it was generallyaccepted that the blue colour ofthe sea was actually a reflection ofthe sky. This was confirmed by thecelebrated physicist Lord Rayleigh,who had proposed that minute particlesin the air scattered the bluewavelength from the Sun's white from it:rays. However, Raman was notconvinced by this explanation. Hespeculated that the blue colour of thesea could be caused by the scatteringof the water molecules.
