It was during this particular seavoyage to London that he was struckby the blue colour of the MediterraneanSea. Till that time, it was generallyaccepted that the blue colour ofthe sea was actually a reflection ofthe sky. This was confirmed by thecelebrated physicist Lord Rayleigh,who had proposed that minute particlesin the air scattered the bluewavelength from the Sun's white from it:rays. However, Raman was notconvinced by this explanation. Hespeculated that the blue colour of thesea could be caused by the scatteringof the water molecules. To verify hisspeculation, he used a polarizedNicol Prism on a sample of sea waterto show that light was indeedscattered by the water molecules
