The Deccan trap is a major volcanic plateau located in the West-Central region of India. It covers an area of over 5 lakh km2. The Deccan traps extend in the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka etc. The Deccan traps began forming about 66.2 million years ago when the lava flow started during the cretaceous period. The spread of flow gradually increased and reached a peak after declining nearly 63 million years ago.
