The Doctrine of Basic Structure was declared by the Supreme Court in the Keshavananda Bharti v/s Kerala in 1973. It was held that the Constitution contains several fundamental or basic elements which can not be amended or abrogated by the Parliament by amending the Constitution. Thus, the Judiciary can strike down any amendment passed by the Parliament which is in conflict with the basic structure. Some of the provisions of basic structure include - supremacy of the Constitution, Unity and Sovereignty of India, Federalism, Secularism etc.
