The most popular and most accepted definition of sustainable development has been given by Brundtland Commission in its report 'our common future' published in 1987. The Brundtland Commission defined sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future, generations to meet their own needs. The Brundtland Commission was appointed by the United Nations in 1983 to unite the countries together to pursue the goal of sustainable development. It was also known as World Commission on Environment and Development. It was chaired by Gro Harlem Brundtland.
