Bindeshwar Pathak is an icon of Sanitation (also known as Soldier of Sanitation) and social reform who has made a difference in the lives of millions of people.
Dr Pathak will be remembered in history for his innovative strides in the field of sanitation as well as social reform.
He is the creator of Sulabh International in 1970, an India-based social service organisation which works to promote human rights, environmental sanitation, non-conventional sources of energy, waste management and social reforms through education.
He is also the Brand Ambassador for Swachh Rail Mission of Indian Railways.
He first came to recognize the plight of scavengers in 1968 when he joined the Bhangi-Mukti (scavengers’ liberation) Cell of the Bihar Gandhi Centenary Celebrations Committee.
He was conferred with Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award in 1991.
