(3) Soap bubbles are physicalexamples of the complex mathematical problem of minimal surface. They assume the shape of least surface area possible containing a given volume. The surface tension of water provides the necessary wall tension for the formation of bubbles with water. The tendency to minimize that wall tension pulls the bubbles into spherical shapes.
