(d) Mangal Pandey is an Indian soldier whose attack on British officers on March 29, 1857, was the first major incident of what came to be known as the Indian, or Sepoy, Mutiny (in India the uprising is often called the First War of Independence). On 29 March 1857 afternoon at the Barrackpore ground near Kolkata, Pandey was walking anxiously in front of the guard room of the regiment, he attacked and injured his British sergeant.
