According to the census 2011, the literacy rate of India is mentioned as 0.7404 i.e- 74.04%.
Among the total literates in India, there are 33,42,50,358 females and 44,42,03,762 are males i.e- 65.5% and 82.1% respectively.
In the case of literacy rates Kerala, Mizoram & Lakshadweep hold the first, second & third positions respectively.
Any person who is aged seven years and above and who can both read and write in any language is treated as ‘literate’ and It is not necessary that a person should receive any formal education or pass any minimum education standard.
Literacy can also be achieved in adult literacy classes or through any non-formal education system.
People who are blind but can read in braille are also treated as literates.
