Directions (141–145) : Read the following passage carefully and choose the best answer to each question out of the four alternatives.
Like watering a plant, we growour friendships (and all our relationships)by nurturing them. Friendshipsneed the same attention asother relationships, if they are tocontinue. These relationships can bedelightfully non-judgemental, supportive, understanding and fun.
Sometimes a friendship canbring out the positive side that younever show in any other relationship. This may be because the pressureof playing a ‘role’ (daughter, partner or child) is removed. Witha friend you are to be yourself andfree to change. Of course, you arefree to do this in all other relationshipsas well, but in friendships: youget to have lots of rehearsals anddiscussion about changes as youexperience them.
It is an unconditional experiencewhere you receive as much asyou give. You can explain yourselfto a friend openly without the fearof hurting a family member. How dofriendships grow? The answer is simple.By revealing yourself; being attentiveremembering what is mostshowing empathy, seeing the worldthrough the eyes of your friend, youwill understand the value of friendship. All this means learning to accepta person from a completely differentfamily to your own or perhapssomeone from a completelydifferent cultural background. Thisis the way we learn tolerance. Inturn we gain tolerance and acceptancefor our own differences.
