Yellow journalism or yellow press pertains to the use of lurid features like vividly shocking headlines that catch people’s attention; crusades against political corruption and social injustice; and sensationalized news to attract readers and increase circulation. It is a type of journalism that does not report fact based real news, rather exaggerates facts in a profit-driven coverage. The phrase was coined in the 1890 s to describe the tactics employed in furious competition between two New York City newspapers, the World and the Journal.
