(d) Brihdishwar Temple was edified by Raja Raja Chola I in the year 1010 A.D. The temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram (‘City of the Chola who Conquered the Ganges’), 35 km north of Kumbakonam, is dedicated to Shiva. It was built by Rajendra I in the 11th century when he moved the Chola capital here from Thanjavur, and has many similarities to Thanjavur’s earlier Brihdishwar Temple. The group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, including the Shore Temple built in the 8th century under the reign of Narasimha Varman II, stand at the shore of the Bay of Bengal.
