The decision to partially decontrol the sugar sector has -taken by theCabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA)- given millers thefreedom to sell in the open market, and removes their obligation tosupply the sweetener at subsidised rates to ration shops. Under the levy mechanism, manufacturers have to sell at least 10 per cent of their produce to the government at cheaper rates. The move will, hence, help in cutting down the losses industry was seeing. The Rangarajan Committee constituted by the PMO, has recommended total decontrol of the sugar industry by doing away with the levy sugar obligation, release mechanism and freeing of export import. So, both statements are correct.
